Masala Baby was created in 2009 in Park Slope, Brooklyn with a goal of creating modern, eclectic, stylish yet wearable clothing for infants and toddlers. The current product line caters to ages 6 months to 6 years, and includes dresses, skirts, tunics, hoodies, pants, tees, bodysuits and shirts. The Masala Baby brand is defined by its signature colors: saffron, clove brown, raani pink and turmeric yellow. Fabrics are exclusively sourced from India, and constructed using traditional handloom, block print, hand screen, hand embroidery and applique techniques crafted by local artisans. Colors and fabrics are combined with Indian cuts, adapted for relaxed wear in an urban environment.
Masala (hindi: मसाला ) transliterated, is a combination of unique ingredients to create a surprising result. A pinch of turmeric, a dash of cloves, a sprig of saffron, and a handful of rose petals provide the inspiration for our signature spice colors, all delicately layered in the threads of this new collection. Merging cultures, changing attitudes and diverse aesthetics have brought about a style which is unique yet global, strangely familiar and simple yet exotic.
Masala Baby is inspired by Indian roots; delicious curries, authentic spices, bollywood movies, beautiful marigold flowers, traditional indian roses, pink stone architecture, colors of the chaotic bazaars all blended together to create a unique palette. The rhapsodic use of color in India in brightly painted streets, mosaics of the palaces, the vivid hues of the women's sarees, the variety of spices used in Indian cooking and the exuberance of Indian festivals, the Indian love of color is celebrated in every facet of daily life. India's textile tradition is a kaleidoscope of colors and cultures. This inspiration has given birth to Masala Baby's unique collections:
- Free Spirit: Inspired by the spirit of everyday life, weaving together the energy of new york & vibrancy of india, instilling global values for our favorite little globe toddler.
- Fun-damentals: Everyday basics, relaxed stylish clothing in colors as varied as our curries, featuring cultural & modern motifs. mix & match for casual comfort
- Loungewear: Lounging in style, perfect for a stroll in the park to rolling in the grass. to relax & appreciate a world full of humility, authenticity, and beauty
- 'Mela': (gathering or village fair): Inspired by the Indian village fairs, Mela draws inspiration from wandering gypsies, fortune tellers, colorful caravans, marigold flowers, medallions and peacock feathers which set the mood for our patterns and colors. Mela is inspired by the fun and festivities of indian village fairs. The cuts and designs are earthy, comfortable yet chic, catering to the new age young traveler that appreciates the simplicity and wonder of life. Masala baby is also proud to collaborate with aden + anais (australian swaddle company) on the introduction of 'Mela' bamboo muslin wraps.
- 'Mod Masala': An urban, modern and casual using our signature prints and unique applique techniques. We are introducing 'khadi' which is indian homespun, handwoven fabric within this collection. Its natural properties keeps this fabric cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Mahatma Gandhi promoted the production of khadi in his movement to revive India's domestic weaving industry. This fabric is close to my heart for its aesthetic appeal as well as the small scale industry that it supports back in India.
